Shutdown Stalls Reports, Fed Hints at Relief
Happy Friday — Brian Manning here with your weekly market update.
It’s been a quiet week in terms of economic data, largely because of the ongoing government shutdown, which has paused most scheduled reports. The biggest news came from the Federal Reserve minutes, released on Wednesday. These are the detailed notes from the Fed’s last meeting, and they offered some interesting insight into what may lie ahead for monetary policy.
Most Fed members appear to agree that additional easing—or rate cuts—will be needed moving forward. While there’s no clear timeline or number of cuts, the general consensus was that the economy could benefit from looser monetary policy. That shouldn’t come as a surprise, given the softening labor market and overall slowdown we’ve been seeing across the country.
With limited data releases this week, the next key report to watch is the Consumer Price Index (CPI). The Bureau of Labor Statistics has indicated they may bring in a light staff to release the CPI report soon, but given the shutdown, it’s possible it won’t arrive until late October or early November.
