Energy Shock Hits
Happy Friday! Brian Manning here with your weekly market update. Inflation data came in hotter than expected this morning, but surprisingly, the markets stayed calm. If you are wondering what the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report means for you, here is why this “hot” number isn’t as scary as it looks.
While the headline inflation number climbed, a single factor drove almost the entire increase: gas prices. Gasoline surged over 20%, accounting for the vast majority of the jump. This is actually good news because it shows that inflation isn’t spreading across all sectors. Instead, we are dealing with a temporary spike caused by global conflict and shipping disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz. Tight oil supplies are pushing prices up, but when you strip out these volatile energy costs, core inflation looks more stable than it has in years.
Major overseas negotiations this weekend will determine the outlook for next week. If these talks progress, oil prices could drop and inflation could ease quickly. However, if the gridlock continues, expect energy prices to stay elevated. The bottom line for homeowners and buyers is that day-to-day costs for most goods remain steady; we are simply navigating the ripples of a global energy event.
Things can change quickly, so stay flexible, stay informed, and try not to overreact to a single headline. For my realtor partners, we have an amazing class available right now called “Just List, Just Sell, Just Win.” We also have another session coming up next week at Simms Steakhouse in Denver. We would love to have you there, but please make sure to RSVP soon because seats are filling up. Happy Friday, and have a great day!
